The Öresundsbron, the bridge over the Öresund between Sweden and Denmark. The 7,8 km long bridge is part of a 16 km long road/rail link between the cities of Copenhagen and its international airport (Kastrup) in Denmark and Malmö in Sweden, and subsequently between the mainland Europe and the large Scandinavian countries. On the Danish side the connections exists of a 4 km long tunnel and a 4 km long artificially made island. The bridge has two layers, with road traffic on top and rail traffic right underneath it. The central pillars are 203.5 m high. The building of the bridge started in 1995 and the construction was opened at July 1, 2000. On average 25,000 road vehicles pass through the toll gates of the bridge everyday.
