The skyline of Kraków on a scrisp January afternoon

View over Kraków on a fresh January day

I have been taking photos ever since my uncle and aunt inspired me to buy my first DSL at the age of 16. I was born in Holland, moved to the eastern part of the Netherlands, immigrated to Sweden. Here I wrote a travel guide book as thick as a brick about my new home country, was a news and radio correspondent and was a teacher in Swedish schools. 15 years after settling in the land of the Vikings, I popped over to the southern side of the Baltic Sea, and found my third home in Kraków, Poland. The third time's the charm.
I fill March with a few throwbacks: to Lübeck in Germany, Gävle and a Cold War Air Base near Gothenburg in Sweden, a hike up into the Bernese Alps in Switzerland, and the Big Lakes of Sweden.

Sweden's big lakes and the Göta Canal
21 March 2026 • The south of Sweden is dominated by two giant lakes: Vänern and Vättern. They are interconnected by the Gothia Canal (Göta Kanal in Swedish), which has been Sweden's historic biggest engineering accomplishment. This story is in large parts a republication in English of excerpts of my 2008 travel guide book in Dutch: Wereldwijzer Zweden.
Berner Alpen | Switzerland
16 March 2026 • The Bernese Alps are known for their spectacular views, with ten summits above 4,000 metres above sea level. Including the Jungfrau, which I saw from afar when I hiked up in 2008. These series are a throwback, bringing to life the views from that trip.
Aeroseum | Cold war underground base, Sweden
8 March 2026 • Up to 30 metres (90 feet) underground near the Swedish city of Gothenburg, an underground airbase has been turned into an aviation museum. The now Aeroseum was once a front-line fighter base of the Swedish Air Force. Commissioned in 1955 and expanded after, the hangar cave was meant to protect the air defence of the Swedish west coast against a nuclear strike.
Gävle| Sweden
7 March 2026 • During my first years in Sweden, I lived in the city of Gävle. Winters were real winters back then, with a snow blanket present for months in a row. Most of the photos in this republished series are from when I called Gävle my hometown.
Lübeck | Germany
1 March 2026 •Lübeck is Germany's most vast UNESCO World Heritage site. A former Hanseatic trade city, it has kept its charm today. A small series of photos of a visit some time back.
